Happy Marching Season!
Attached below are two documents that are also in the Band Handbook that was handed out to all of the students the first week of school. The performance/practice schedule (which is mostly correct) and the activity permission paper that needs to be filled out by the parent, signed and returned to me.
The Oct. 15 competition is in Grants Pass. The band will be leaving very early in the morning, performing at 11:00 AM, then again around 5:00 PM. The competition finishes about 9:00 PM. We will be staying overnight at the Best Western in Grants Pass and returning early the next day. More info will be sent out soon. If you would like to go as chaperones and stay in a room please let me know ASAP. I have 3 chaperone rooms remaining. The cost is $70.

This Tuesday (July 12) there WILL be a parent meeting at 7:00 PM in the band room.
This meeting is for all those who are interested in knowing about and helping with our fall marching season. We will be discussing; performances, practice schedule, money issues, uniforms, show props, communication, and other important things. We will be competing this year and I really can't go it alone without parental support. The music is already here, the drill is being written, this should be an exciting year.
I will be sending out an email after our meeting with some of the discussion items. If you have a student that is marching this fall, please make an effort to be there. I understand that this is vacation season. Let me know if you would like to help out but will be absent that day.
Thanks for all you do to support this program.

June 17
Dear Band Parents,
I want to start by expressing my gratitude to all the students and parents of the MAC band program; students who either just finished a year with the high school band or who will have the opportunity to perform with the high school band next year.
Every student played an important part of the success that we had this year. To all of those who will not be with us in the fall, I want to express my heartfelt thanks for your efforts. If you are graduating, congratulations! Go make a life for yourself. For those who have chosen to move elsewhere, the door is always open and I will welcome you back to the band room with open arms. Scheduling is not permanent. If you have second thoughts, you can be easily be put back on the roster. To all of the parents and soon to be high school freshmen: Welcome aboard, you are in for a great ride.
Opportunities come quick around here.
Summer Band begins next Tuesday for all brass and woodwinds: 8-10 am Tues, Th, Fr
and Wednesday for Guard and percussion: 8-10 am Wed, Th, Fr.
Second week of Summer Band – same schedule
Saturday June 25th Carlton Fun Days Parade! Bus leaves at 11 am from the MHS band room.
Wear your pink parade t-shirts, we will be playing “Happy” and the fight song.
Monday July 4th Lincoln City 4th of July Parade @ Gleneden Beach. Bus leaves MHS Band room at 10am
Same shirt, same music.
Everyone is welcome! IF YOU CANT BE TO ALL THE REHEARSALS COME ANYWAY AND DO YOUR BEST
Parents, a little push would be greatly appreciated. Now that the 8th graders are part of the MHS band, the more experienced band students will be a valuable resource for the younger students. They will set the tone and example for the future of this program. If you can be a part of just one of the parades please take this opportunity.
More information concerning this coming year’s Marching Band Camp will be given in the future. We will be performing at football games and competitions around the state this year. We will be the first ever competitive marching band at McMinnville HS. It takes some effort but the payoff is worth it.
Thank you again parents, I can’t do this without you.

The Jazz Band is playing at Jimmy Mak’s in Portland tonight. This would be a great opportunity to get away to a nice place and enjoy some good food and good jazz. Here is some important info concerning our concert tonight.
For parents/audience
The MHS Jazz Band will perform at Jimmy Mak’s 6:30-7:30, Monday, June 13. The Dan Balmer Trio will perform 8:00pm-11:00pm. There is no cover charge this night, and Jimmy Mak’s is very unlikely to sell-out, so you should have no trouble getting a table when you arrive. However, if other people make reservations later that evening, the tables closest to the stage may not be available. So just in case, we’ll go ahead and reserve tables for anyone in our group. Contact Laurie Kiff [email protected] if you are interested. You can also make a reservation for your kid (for after they perform), or you could make your own reservations (503-295-6542) Every reservation requires a $15 minimum food purchase, that evening. All minors must leave by 9:30pm. Jimmy Mak’s 221 NW 10th Portland 503-295-6542
Also, Music Boosters BBQ for the kids isTuesday Jun 14. Bring something to share.
BPO afterwards… possibly.
Would love to have your kids in Summer Band to march :
in the Carlton Fun Days parade June 25
and the Lincoln City 4th of July Parade on… uh… July 4th.
Hope to see you there.

Hopefully your student is exhaustedly happy. The Seattle trip was fantastic. I want to express my greatest admiration and gratefulness to (chaperones) Kara DeMarco, Brian Bailey, Wayne Stocks, and Laurie Kiff; Bus Driver ‘Bruce’, the best bus driver I have ever had; Experience Oregon the bussing company; The manager at Old Country Buffet and Mabel our very quiet server, for trying to fit us in on top of a group that was taking their time leaving; the amazing young lady at the desk of the Comfort Inn and Suites in Federal way (we were her first big group); the zoo lady who gave us a 20% discount; the monorail guy who gave us the group rate because they lost our online reservation; and I can’t forget the manager at Safeway who gave me the 1 pound bag of Blue Diamond Smokehouse Almonds for the price of the little can, because they had run out of them. I’m still eating them, as I write this. : )
Parents, thank you for letting me take your children on an out of state trip. This was a great experience for all of us. Please talk to the chaperones if you have any questions of any type or want to know how it ‘really’ was. Maybe next time I will take all the parents on a trip and leave the kids home…. Hmmm…. That’s an idea.
If you have any photos or videos you would like to share, please send them to the Schiebers. I’m sure they would love to post them on the website!

March, 2016 Update:
As we get closer to April I would like to remind everyone that another $100 trip payment is Due this week. I have had to pay out some money already in order to reserve rooms and tickets etc. It would be greatly appreciated if you could make your best effort to make a payment to the book keeper in the main office this week. Next Monday I hope to have a running balance for each student. That way you will know better what your final payment will be. I appreciate all of your patience and support in this endeavor.
As you know, the band has been hosting some fundraisers to help offset the cost of our spring trip. Our next venture will be hosting a community garage sale. The date and location have not yet been finalized. There is currently a parent who has agreed to head this committee. We will need many student volunteers to work this fundraiser. I will be sending around sign-up sheets as the time for the event draws closer.
We are also looking for parents who would be willing to assist with the planning, advertising and supervision of student workers for this fundraiser. PLEASE offer to help us with this activity. Every student in our program benefits. *
Any questions? Let me know what you are thinking.
Thank you for your continual patience and support.

January, 2016 Update: HUGE shoutout to Superintendent Maryalice Russell for the purchase of our marching band podium for next year. Also a HUGE shout out to - Rose Marie Caughran for buying a 45 Minute Performance by MHS Jazz Ensemble! Thank you to all those (parents and students and staff) who worked toward making the Jazz Night Fundraiser Event a huge success this year! Thank you to those who attended and to those who performed as well! January, 2016: I can hardly believe that half the school year has come and gone. I am extremely grateful for all of the parental support that I have received. I honestly cannot do this by myself. Thank you, thank you, thank you. The students deserve so much more but we will do the best we can and continue to move forward. Marching season was a success and the students were both parent and eager to perform. They did a great job. I am especially grateful to the band dads that helped move a lot equipment this fall. It takes a lot of hands to move a band. In December we received some good donated instruments and are still looking for more. If you or someone you know has an instrument lying around the house that is not being used anymore, please consider donating it to the band program. Our first concert band performance is Thursday. It should be an educational musical experience. The music is fun and the students are working hard. Jazz night is just around the corner. I hope to see everyone there. It will be a great night of food and entertainment. Contact the Music Boosters if you would like further information. The Band Parent Organization (BPO) meets every 2nd Tuesday of the month at 7:00. Come and discuss all of the current, pertinent topics with me. There are still many, many things I would like to implement into the program and I am excited for another half a school year to continue our forward march. If you have any questions, concerns or ideas, please feel free to send us a message. December, 2015 INSTRUMENT DONATIONS: With the future creation of a 5th grade band, the band program is in need of instruments to put in the hands of young musicians. The band program would like to ask members of the community to make a tax deductible donation of any musical instrument that they may have laying around the house, in closets, under beds or in attics. Instruments can be turned in to the high school this week. Instruments can also be turned in to ‘Incahoots’ during their business hours. Instruments dropped off at Incahoots will not receive a donation slip until Mr. Barton can determine a value. Donators will receive a receipt for their donation dated at the time that the donation was made so that it can be used as a tax deductible donation on that year’s taxes. Any instrument in any condition will be accepted. If you have any ability to share this email with a multitude of others, please feel free to participate. |
